  Big data, generated by various sources such as mobile devices, sensors, and the Internet of Things (IoT), has many characteristics such as volume, velocity, variety, variability, veracity, validity, vulnerability, volatility, visualization, and value. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is essential for cybersecurity to detect intrusions before or after attacks. Traditional software methods struggle to store, manage, and analyze big data, developing new techniques for effective and rapid intrusion detection in organizations and enterprises. This study introduces the IDS Random Forest (RF) model in binary and multiclass classification for intrusion detection. In this model, we used the Synthetic Minority Oversampling TEchnique (SMOTE) to address class imbalances, and the RF classifier to classify attacks using the Network Security Laboratory (NSL)-KDD dataset. In the experiment, we compared the IDS-RF model with the Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), and Logistic Regression (LR) classifiers in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and times for training and testing. The experimental results showed that the IDS-RF model achieved high performance in binary and multiclass classification compared to others. In addition, the proposed model also achieved high accuracies for each class (Normal, DoS, Probe, U2R, or R2L) and obtained 98.69%, 99.72%, 98.93%, 95.13%, and 89%, respectively.

  The current generation of climate models has proven very helpful in understanding and projecting anthropogenic climate change but has also shown to be insufficient for studying the interactions of tipping elements and their impact on overall climate stability. As a consequence, tipping elements are mostly absent from climate projections that are commonly used by the drinking water industry to test the resilience of their systems. There is, however, mounting evidence for the existence and potential (possibly even imminent) activation of some of these tipping elements. The drinking water sector is, by necessity, slow-moving as its infrastructure is meant to operate for many decades and in practice often does so even longer. The time scales of possible changes associated with tipping element activations may, however, be much shorter. We provide a review of the current understanding of climate tipping elements and present a simple model that investigates potential magnitudes and time scales of rapid climate change associated with tipping element activations. We study the potential consequences for drinking water supply systems, focusing on Europe, and argue that given the associated deep uncertainty and far-reaching consequences, it is essential to include tipping scenarios in the decision-making processes in the drinking water sector.

  Realistic full-body avatars play a key role in representing users in virtual environments, where they have been shown to considerably improve body ownership and presence. Driven by the growing demand for realistic virtual humans, extensive research on scanning-based avatar reconstruction has been conducted in recent years. Most methods, however, require complex hardware, such as expensive camera rigs and/or controlled capture setups, thereby restricting avatar generation to specialized labs. We propose WILDAVATARS, an approach that empowers even non-experts without access to complex equipment to capture realistic avatars in the wild. Our avatar generation is based on an easy-to-use smartphone application that guides the user through the scanning process and uploads the captured data to a server, which in a fully automatic manner reconstructs a photorealistic avatar that is ready to be downloaded into a VR application. To increase the availability and foster the use of realistic virtual humans in VR applications we will make WILDAVATARS publicly available for research purposes.

  Our work investigates the influence of self-related cues in the design of virtual humans on body perception in virtual reality. In a 2x2 mixed design, 64 participants faced photorealistic virtual humans either as a motion-synchronized embodied avatar or as an autonomous moving agent, appearing subsequently with a personalized and generic texture. Our results unveil that self-related cues through embodiment and personalization yield an individual and complemented increase in participants' sense of embodiment and self-identification towards the virtual human. Different body weight modification and estimation tasks further showed an impact of both factors on participants' body weight perception. Additional analyses revealed that the participant's body mass index predicted body weight estimations in all conditions and that participants' self-esteem and body shape concerns correlated with different body weight perception results. Hence, we have demonstrated the occurrence of double standards through induced self-related cues in virtual human perception, especially through embodiment.

  Mixed, augmented, and virtual reality, collectively known as extended reality (XR), allows users to immerse themselves in virtual environments and engage in experiences surpassing reality's boundaries. Virtual humans are ubiquitous in such virtual environments and can be utilized for myriad purposes, offering the potential to greatly impact daily life. Through the embodiment of virtual humans, XR offers the opportunity to influence how we see ourselves and others. In this function, virtual humans serve as a predefined stimulus whose perception is elementary for researchers, application designers, and developers to understand. This dissertation aims to investigate the influence of individual-, system-, and application-related factors on the perception of virtual humans in virtual environments, focusing on their potential use as stimuli in the domain of body perception. Individual-related factors encompass influences based on the user's characteristics, such as appearance, attitudes, and concerns. System-related factors relate to the technical properties of the system that implements the virtual environment, such as the level of immersion. Application-related factors refer to design choices and specific implementations of virtual humans within virtual environments, such as their rendering or animation style. This dissertation provides a contextual framework and reviews the relevant literature on factors influencing the perception of virtual humans. To address identified research gaps, it reports on five empirical studies analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from a total of 165 participants. The studies utilized a custom-developed XR system, enabling users to embody rapidly generated, photorealistically personalized virtual humans that can be realistically altered in body weight and observed using different immersive XR displays. The dissertation's findings showed, for example, that embodiment and personalization of virtual humans serve as self-related cues and moderate the perception of their body weight based on the user's body weight. They also revealed a display bias that significantly influences the perception of virtual humans, with disparities in body weight perception of up to nine percent between different immersive XR displays. Based on all findings, implications for application design were derived, including recommendations regarding reconstruction, animation, body weight modification, and body weight estimation methods for virtual humans, but also for the general user experience. By revealing influences on the perception of virtual humans, this dissertation contributes to understanding the intricate relationship between users and virtual humans. The findings and implications presented have the potential to enhance the design and development of virtual humans, leading to improved user experiences and broader applications beyond the domain of body perception.

  This study draws on signaling theory to investigate the effect of hedonic signals in crowdfunding projects on funding performance. It compares the effect of hedonic signals across reward-, equity-, and donation-based crowdfunding platforms by combining archival data from 18 platforms and a large-scale panel of 64 experts that rate the strength of hedonic signals in 108 crowdfunding projects. Through the application of mixed linear modeling, the findings indicate a positive influence of stronger hedonic signals on funding performance. However, there are substantial differences across platform types. Increasing the strength of hedonic signals by one standard deviation increases funding performance by 28.9% on reward platforms, while there are no systematic effects on equity and donation platforms. This study contributes to existing crowdfunding research by clarifying the role of hedonic signals in crowdfunding and shedding light on the increasing need to better consider the characteristics of different crowdfunding platforms in crowdfunding research.

  Die hier ohne Änderungen erneut edierte Quellensammlung "Pazifismus und Kriegsdienstverweigerung in der frühen Kirche" kursierte 1984 als Geheimtipp unter friedensbewegten Christenmenschen und wurde dann aufgrund der starken Nachfrage bis 1991 vom deutschen Zweig des Internationalen Versöhnungsbundes in sechs Auflagen verbreitet, versehen mit einem Vorwort von Konrad Lübbert. Im einleitenden Teil erläuterte der Bearbeiter Thomas Gerhards vor vier Jahrzehnten seine Intention: "Eine der großen Fragen, mit denen ich mein Studium der Theologie begann, lautete: Wie kommt es, dass Christen, denen Jesus die völlige Gewaltlosigkeit vorlebte ..., nicht klarer gegen das immer erschreckendere Wettrüsten Stellung beziehen? Müsste seine Kirche die Haltung Jesu nicht deutlicher herausstellen? Ist, angesichts der heutigen Situation, die Kriegsdienstverweigerung für eine/n Christin/en nicht die notwendige Konsequenz? Ich entdeckte, dass die frühe Kirche viel entschlossener die gewaltlose Botschaft Jesu zu leben suchte. Aus zweijähriger Beschäftigung mit dem Thema erwuchs diese Quellensammlung, da ich immer wieder feststellte, wie ... unzureichend das Wissen um die Haltung der frühen Christen zu Krieg und Kriegsdienst war. - Die Dokumente aus den ersten drei Jahrhunderten des Christentums sind zu bedeutsam, als dass man sie - wie die herrschende Kirchenhistorie - mit wenigen Sätzen abtun und dann zum 'Gerechten Krieg' übergehen kann."

  Previous studies found many climate properties such as northern hemisphere (NH) surface temperature and precipitation respond non-monotonically when CO2 is increased from 1× to 8×CO2 relative to pre-industrial levels. Here, we explore the robustness of the non-monotonicity in the NH precipitation response in 11 coupled climate models. Eight models show a decrease in NH precipitation under repeated CO2 doubling, indicating that the non-monotonic response is a common but not universal result. Although common, the critical CO2 level where the NH precipitation decrease first occurs differs widely across models, ranging from 2×CO2 to 8×CO2. These models also show a prominent weakening in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) at the same critical CO2 level, with the AMOC weakening leading the precipitation decrease. The sensitivities of NH precipitation and the AMOC to CO2 doublings are positively correlated, especially when the AMOC weakens beyond 10 Sv. This suggests that the differences in models’ AMOC response can explain their contrasting NH precipitation responses, where models with a large AMOC weakening have decreased NH precipitation. Regionally, this decrease in NH precipitation is the most prominent over the North Atlantic, Europe and the tropical Pacific. Our results suggest that special care must be taken with the use of pattern scaling to inform regional climate decision-making.

  The subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) is crucial in the global ocean circulation system and one of the few regions where deep convection occurs. The intermediate and deep waters formed in the SPNA have long been investigated, yet their sources and pathways are not fully understood. In this study, we employ a combination of two radionuclide tracers, namely, ¹²⁹I and ²³⁶U, to understand water mass provenance and mixing in the SPNA. The concentrations measured between Portugal and Greenland and across the Labrador Sea in 2020/2021 agreed with previously observed tracer distributions. The highest tracer concentrations were measured in the East Greenland Current (EGC), Denmark Strait Overflow Water (DSOW), and, to a lesser extent, in the eastward-flowing Labrador Sea Water (LSW). In contrast, waters of southern origin such as the North East Antarctic Bottom Water and North East Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) carried comparably smaller amounts of ¹²⁹I. By using a binary mixing model, we estimated that the EGC contains about 29%–32% of the Polar Surface Water outflowing the Fram Strait. DSOW was mainly derived from 20% to 35% Return Atlantic Water and mixed with LSW. The Iceland Scotland Overflow Water (ISOW) evolved into North East Atlantic Deep Water in the Irminger and Labrador seas primarily by mixing with LSW and, to a lesser extent, with DSOW. The ¹²⁹I and ²³⁶U binary mixing approach was less conclusive for LSW, reaching the current limitation of the model. This study suggests potential benefits and limitations of using ¹²⁹I and ²³⁶U to investigate the mixing and provenance of water masses in the SPNA.

  Literary genres are commonly viewed as being defined in terms of content and stylistic features. In this paper, we focus on one particular class of lexical features, namely emotion information, and investigate the hypothesis that emotion-related information correlates with particular genres. Using genre classification as a testbed, we compare a model that computes lexicon-based emotion scores globally for complete stories with a model that tracks emotion arcs through stories on a subset of Project Gutenberg with five genres. Our main findings are: (a), the global emotion model is competitive with a large-vocabulary bag-of-words genre classifier (80\%F1); (b), the emotion arc model shows a lower performance (59 \% F1) but shows complementary behavior to the global model, as indicated by a very good performance of an oracle model (94 \% F1) and an improved performance of an ensemble model (84 \% F1); (c), genres differ in the extent to which stories follow the same emotional arcs, with particularly uniform behavior for anger (mystery) and fear (adventures, romance, humor, science fiction).

  Vernunft und Wahrheit sind kein allein der Philosophie vorbehaltenes Thema, sondern stellen im spezifischen Sinn eine politische Praxis dar: Dies nötigt zu einer gesellschaftstheoretischen Erweiterung des Gegenstandsbereichs der politischen Theorie und der Ideengeschichte. Eine solche Überlegung verdankt den Arbeiten Michel Foucaults ebensoviel wie den älteren Vertretern der Kritischen Theorie, die Vernunft als materielles Verhältnis verstanden wissen wollten. Die Kritische Theorie ist in der vorliegenden Untersuchung Gegenstand einer so verstandenen politischen Archäologie theoretischer Praxis.
