  Modern embedded systems are characterized by a steady progression towards greater efficiency, complexity, and autonomy. A key aspect of this evolution is the incorporation of self-* properties, enabling embedded systems that adapt and optimize performance autonomously.   We explore the role that works councils can play in promoting inclusive and democratic Innovation processes in companies by democratizing anticipatory pratices. Based on interviews with 33 experts from 13 German companies with particularly well-developed co-determination practices, we examine how works councils have developed ways of thinking about the future(s) of their companies and to influence transformations within companies in the interests of their employees (and even society as a whole). These councils analyze societal and industry trends, develop visions for the digital transformation, and introduce demonstrators of new technology to facilitate debate among employees about the future of their working environments. In doing so, they have demonstrated a remarkable ability to broaden the scope and diversity of the stakeholders involved in anticipatory practices in business contexts. We then discuss the conditions that have enabled these works councils, as rare pioneers in the field, to develop the epistemic capacities to enable more inclusive forms of anticipatory practices. Typically, business decisions, and with them the most impactful anticipatory practices, are largely monopolised by the management and owners of firms. Accordingly, we will discuss structural reforms, including reforms of the Works Constitution Act, to strengthen the voice of workers in company governance. This would democratize anticipatory practices, leading to more socially (and environmentally) sustainable innovations and thus to better societal outcomes.

  Ruthenium complexes with 2,2′-bipyridine-6,6′-dicarboxylate (bda) ligands have emerged as highly potent catalysts for water oxidation. In this context, the accumulation of active Ru centers in macrocyclic arrays or coordination oligomers and polymers has proven to be very beneficial for an enhanced stability under operating conditions and to facilitate surface adhesion in heterogeneous systems. For a better insight into structure–activity relationships though, well–defined systems with a precise control over stoichiometry and constitution are highly desired. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of a series of structurally precise and monodisperse linear coordination oligomers [(Ru(bda))nLn−1pic2] (n = 4 or 5, L = 4,4′-bipyridine or 1,4-bis-(pyridine-4-yl)benzene derivatives, pic = 4-picoline), in excellent purity and yields are reported. Based on detailed mechanistic investigations, a complex network of interconnected and competing reactions is proposed that fully explains both the high overall turnover and the kinetic pathway selection between alternative endcapping and dissociation–elongation sequences.

  In the last decade, advancements in attosecond spectroscopy have allowed researchers to study and manipulate electron dynamics in condensed matter via ultrafast light fields, offering the possibility to realise ultrafast optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the generation of light-induced quantum tunnelling currents in graphene phototransistors by ultrafast laser pulses in an ambient environment. This tunnelling effect provides access to an instantaneous field-driven current, demonstrating a current switching effect (ON and OFF) on a ~630 attosecond scale (~1.6 petahertz speed). We show the tunability of the tunnelling current and enhancement of the graphene phototransistor conductivity by controlling the density of the photoexcited charge carriers at different pump laser powers. We exploited this capability to demonstrate various logic gates. The reported approach under ambient conditions is suitable for the development of petahertz optical transistors, lightwave electronics, and optical quantum computers.

  Storms are emerging as key drivers in shaping hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Trace gas condensation can suppress convection and disrupt the distribution of energy and material in hydrogen atmospheres. On Jupiter, the presence of water has been invoked to control the occurrence of large-scale storms; however, the impact of storms on the ammonia and temperature distribution is unknown. We use Juno Microwave Radiometer observations of a large-scale storm in 2017 to study the aftermath of such a storm on the atmosphere. Anomalies in the retrieved ammonia abundance and atmospheric temperature show how storms deplete and heat the upper atmosphere while simultaneously depositing material well below the layers they were triggered at. These observations, aided by simulations, show that the water and ammonia cycles are coupled and that their combined effect plays a key role in explaining the depletion of ammonia in the tropospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. Data from Juno spacecraft reveals how giant Jupiter storms dry the upper atmosphere and deposit material in the deep atmosphere.

  Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) communicate in complex ways, including sounds produced by hand and foot drumming on trees, often combined with loud vocalizations. Recently, a puzzling stone throwing behaviour at trees was observed, resulting in stone piles at tree buttresses. It is a rare case of tool used for communication in animals and suggested to function like buttress drumming in long-distance communication and male displays. We tested this hypothesis by determining the behavioural dynamics in comparison to hand and foot tree buttress drumming in Western chimpanzees in Boé, Guinea Bissau. Using camera traps, we show that in 78% of cases, stones were picked up at trees, not leading to further stone accumulation beyond the already existing stone piles. Stone-assisted and hand and foot drumming occurred separately or were combined in similar behavioural contexts in apparent long-distance communication and highly aroused behavioural contexts. Yet, immediately before stone drumming, chimpanzees swayed less and pant-hooted more while afterwards pant-hooting less compared to the other contexts, suggesting a separate motivation and/or function for stone-assisted drumming. It suggests this unique stone-based activity has its own signal value, separate from hand/foot buttress drumming and, considering the spatial variation, might be culturally transmitted.
• Loop Patterns Formed by Cellular Automata. Hoffmann, Rolf; Białecki, Mariusz (2025).

  A Cellular Automata (CA) rule is presented that can generate "loop patterns" in a 2D grid under fixed boundary conditions. A loop is a cyclically closed path represented by one-cells enclosed by zero-cells. A loop pattern can contain several loops that are not allowed to touch each other. The problem is solved by designing an appropriate set of tiles that can overlap and which are used in the CA rule. Templates are derived from the tiles which are used for local pattern matching. In order to drive the evolution to the desired patterns, noise is injected if the templates do not match or other constraints are not fulfilled. The general CA rule can be specialized by enabling certain conditions, and the characteristics of five rule variants are explained. Simulations illustrate that the CA rule can securely evolve stable loop patterns. The preliminary theoretical analysis of the obtained loop patterns raises many interesting research problems for the future -- several of them have been briefly discussed.

  Fossilised dinosaur footprints enable us to study the behaviour of individual dinosaurs as well as interactions between dinosaurs of the same or different species. There are two principal groups of three-toed dinosaurs, ornithopods and theropods. Determining if a footprint is from an ornithopod or a theropod is a challenging problem. Based on a data set of over 300 dinosaur footprints we train several machine learning models for classifying footprints as either ornithopods or theropods. The data are provided in the form of 20 landmarks for representing each footprint which are derived from images. Variable selection using logistic forward regression demonstrates that the selected landmarks are at locations that are intuitively expected to be especially informative locations, such as the top or the bottom of a footprint. Most models show good accuracy but the recall of ornithopods, of which fewer samples were contained in the data set, was generally lower than the recall of theropods. The Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) stands out as the model which did best at dealing with the class imbalance. Finally, we investigate which footprints were misclassified by the majority of models. We find that some misclassified samples exhibit features that are characteristic of the other class or have a compromised shape, for example, a middle toe that points to the left or the right rather than straight ahead.

  The Triassic was a time of ecological upheaval as life recovered from the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. Archosauromorphs were a key component of the recovery, diversifying substantially during the Triassic and encompassing the origins of dinosaurs, pterosaurs and crocodylomorphs. Here, we explore the evolution of locomotion in Archosauromorpha to test whether dinosaurs show any distinctive locomotory features that might explain their success. We implement geometric morphometrics on limb bone shapes and use limb ratios to calculate bipedality and cursoriality metrics. We find that the Avemetatarsalia (dinosaurs, pterosaurs and relatives) exhibit more variable limb form and limb ratios than any other group, indicating a wider range of locomotory modes. The earliest avemetatarsalians were bipedal and cursorial, and their range of form increased through the Triassic with notable diversification shifts following extinction events. This is especially true of dinosaurs, even though these changes cannot be discriminated from a stochastic process. By contrast, the Pseudosuchia (crocodilians and relatives) were more restricted in limb form and locomotor mode with disparity decreasing through time, suggesting more limited locomotor adaptation and vulnerability to extinction. Perhaps the greater locomotor plasticity of dinosaurs gave them a competitive advantage in the changing climates of the Late Triassic.

  The jigsaw-puzzle fit of South America and Africa is an icon of plate tectonics and continental drift. Fieldwork in Angola since 2002 allows the correlation of onshore outcrops and offshore geophysical and well-core data in the context of rift, sag, salt, and post-salt drift phases of the opening of the central South Atlantic. These outcrops, ranging in age from textgreater130 Ma to textless71 Ma, record Early Cretaceous outpouring of the Etendeka–Paraná Large Igneous Province (Bero Volcanic Complex) and rifting, followed by continental carbonate and siliciclastic deposition (Tumbalunda Formation) during the sagging of the nascent central South Atlantic basin. By the Aptian, evaporation of sea water resulted in thick salt deposits (Bambata Formation), terminated by seafloor spreading. The Equatorial Atlantic Gateway began opening by the early Late Cretaceous (100 Ma) and allowed flow of currents between the North and South Atlantic, creating environmental conditions that heralded the introduction of marine reptiles. These dramatic outcrops are a unique element of geoheritage because they arguably comprise the most complete terrestrially exposed geological record of the puzzle-like icon of continental drift.

  The ecological and digital transformation presents companies with the challenge of changing business models and innovation paths. The dual system of industrial relations in Germany has so far offered few opportunities for trade unions and works councils to have a say in these processes of corporate strategic change. In recent years, however, approaches to strategic co-determination have developed that enable works councils to influence business models and production strategies. This article examines the potential of these approaches to steer the ecological and digital transformation in the interest of workers. Based on 15 interviews with 25 experts in 7 companies, it uses three cases in the automotive supply industry and the retail sector to reconstruct the organisation of strategic co-determination and the conflicts surrounding its direction in the companies. The article concludes that the cases analysed indicate a local reconfiguration of industrial relations, because ecological and digital upheaval situations are used by works councils to expand economic democratic participation. The orientation of these institutions is contested above all along the lines of whether they are bodies of corporatist co-management or employee-driven interest politics.

  The sudden decentralisation of work caused by the COVID-19 pandemic challenges institutionalised work practices, which some companies seek to counter by using people analytics. Narratives around people analytics often portray it as an enabler of remote workers’ (self-)organisation. Simultaneously, especially when deployed for performance management, people analytics is considered an enabler of workplace surveillance. Further, algorithmic biases in the systems can perpetuate social injustice and discrimination of marginalised groups, impacting established hierarchies and social structures in the workplace. Our study 1) provides an overview of the status of emerging themes around people analytics, remote working, and leadership, and 2) assesses the impact people analytics has on shifting structures in organisations. We guide our analysis by deploying and extending the Structurational Model of Technology. Our results suggest that people analytics poses vastly different challenges for employees and leaders, and that it can potentially contradict current trends towards flat hierarchies.

  Reliable information on population size is fundamental to the management of threatened species. For wild species, mark-recapture methods are a cornerstone of abundance estimation. Here, we show the first application of the close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) method to a terrestrial species of high conservation value; the Christmas Island flying-fox (CIFF). The CIFF is the island's last remaining native terrestrial mammal and was recently listed as critically endangered. CKMR is a powerful tool for estimating the demographic parameters central to CIFF management and circumvents the complications arising from the species' cryptic nature, mobility, and difficult-to-survey habitat. To this end, we used genetic data from 450 CIFFs captured between 2015 and 2019 to detect kin pairs. We implemented a novel CKMR model that estimates sex-specific abundance, trend, and mortality and accommodates observations from the kin-pair distribution of male reproductive skew and mate persistence. CKMR estimated CIFF total adult female abundance to be approximately 2050 individuals (95% CI (950, 4300)). We showed that on average only 23% of the adult male population contributed to annual reproduction and strong evidence for between-year mate fidelity, an observation not previously quantified for a Pteropus species in the wild. Critically, our population estimates provide the most robust understanding of the status of this critically endangered population, informing immediate and future conservation initiatives.

  Evidence of Late Triassic large tetrapods from the UK is rare. Here, we describe a track-bearing surface located on the shoreline near Penarth, south Wales, United Kingdom. The total exposed surface is textlessitalictextgreaterc.textless/italictextgreater  50 m long and textlessitalictextgreaterc.textless/italictextgreater  2 m wide, and is split into northern and southern sections by a small fault. We interpret these impressions as tracks, rather than abiogenic sedimentary structures, because of the possession of marked displacement rims and their relationship to each other with regularly spaced impressions forming putative trackways. The impressions are large (up to \textlessitalic\textgreaterc.\textless/italic\textgreater  50 cm in length), but poorly preserved, and retain little information about track-maker anatomy. We discuss alternative, plausible, abiotic mechanisms that might have been responsible for the formation of these features, but reject them in favour of these impressions being tetrapod tracks. We propose that the site is an additional occurrence of the ichnotaxon textlessitalictextgreaterEosauropustextless/italictextgreater , representing a sauropodomorph trackmaker, thereby adding a useful new datum to their sparse Late Triassic record in the UK. We also used historical photogrammetry to digitally map the extent of site erosion during 2009–2020. More than 1 m of the surface exposure has been lost over this 11-year period, and the few tracks present in both models show significant smoothing, breakage and loss of detail. These tracks are an important datapoint for Late Triassic palaeontology in the UK, even if they cannot be confidently assigned to a specific trackmaker. The documented loss of the bedding surface highlights the transient and vulnerable nature of our fossil resources, particularly in coastal settings, and the need to gather data as quickly and effectively as possible.

  Despite an enormous philosophical literature on models in science, surprisingly little has been written about data models and how they are constructed. In this paper, I examine the case of how paleodiversity data models are constructed from the fossil data. In particular, I show how paleontologists are using various model-based techniques to correct the data. Drawing on this research, I argue for the following related theses: first, the `purity' of a data model is not a measure of its epistemic reliability. Instead it is the fidelity of the data that matters. Second, the fidelity of a data model in capturing the signal of interest is a matter of degree. Third, the fidelity of a data model can be improved `vicariously', such as through the use of post hoc model-based correction techniques. And, fourth, data models, like theoretical models, should be assessed as adequate (or inadequate) for particular purposes.

  Locomotor energetics are an important determinant of an animal's ecological niche. It is commonly assumed that animals minimize locomotor energy expenditure by selecting gait kinematics tuned to the natural frequencies of relevant body parts. We demonstrate that this allows estimation of the preferred step frequency and walking speed of Tyrannosaurus rex, using an approach we introduce as the Natural Frequency Method. Although the tail of bipedal dinosaurs was actively involved in walking, it was suspended passively by the caudal interspinous ligaments. These allowed for elastic energy storage, thereby reducing the metabolic cost of transport. In order for elastic energy storage to be high, step and natural frequencies would have to be matched. Using a 3D morphological reconstruction and a spring-suspended biomechanical model, we determined the tail natural frequency of T. rex (0.66 s -1, range 0.41-0.84), and the corresponding walking speed (1.28 m s -1, range 0.80-1.64), which we argue to be a good indicator of preferred walking speed (PWS). The walking speeds found here are lower than earlier estimations for large theropods, but agree quite closely with PWS of a diverse group of extant animals. The results are most sensitive to uncertainties regarding ligament moment arms, vertebral kinematics and ligament composition. However, our model formulation and method for estimation of walking speed are unaffected by assumptions regarding muscularity, and therefore offer an independent line of evidence within the field of dinosaur locomotion.

  Big data development is a disturbing issue that will affect enterprise across various sectors. The increase of data volume, high speed of data generation and increasing rate of different data from heterogeneous sources have led to difficulties in data management. This paper first reviews different aspects of big data management, including data integration and traditional data warehouse, and their associated challenges. The problems include increase of redundant data, data accessibility, time consumption in data modelling and data movement from heterogeneous sources into a central database, especially in the big data environment. We then propose a logical data management approach using RESTview technology to integrate and analyse data, without fully adopting traditional ETL processes. Data that for governance, corporate, security or other restriction reasons cannot be copied or moved, can easily be accessed, integrated and analysed, without creating a central repository. Data can be kept in its original form and location, eliminating the movement of data, significantly speeding up the process and allowing for live data interrogation. It may not be the practical solution for every situation but, it is a feasible solution that is comparably cost effective.

  Synopsis: Tyrannosaurid dinosaurs had large preserved leg muscle attachments and low rotational inertia relative to their body mass, indicating that they could turn more quickly than other large theropods. Methods: To compare turning capability in theropods, we regressed agility estimates against body mass, incorporating superellipse-based modeled mass, centers of mass, and rotational inertia (mass moment of inertia). Muscle force relative to body mass is a direct correlate of agility in humans, and torque gives potential angular acceleration. Agility scores therefore include rotational inertia values divided by proxies for (1) muscle force (ilium area and estimates of m. caudofemoralis longus cross-section), and (2) musculoskeletal torque. Phylogenetic ANCOVA (phylANCOVA) allow assessment of differences in agility between tyrannosaurids and non-tyrannosaurid theropods (accounting for both ontogeny and phylogeny). We applied conditional error probabilities a(p) to stringently test the null hypothesis of equal agility. Results: Tyrannosaurids consistently have agility index magnitudes twice those of allosauroids and some other theropods of equivalent mass, turning the body with both legs planted or pivoting over a stance leg. PhylANCOVA demonstrates definitively greater agilities in tyrannosaurids, and phylogeny explains nearly all covariance. Mass property results are consistent with those of other studies based on skeletal mounts, and between different figure-based methods (our main mathematical slicing procedures, lofted 3D computer models, and simplified graphical double integration). Implications: The capacity for relatively rapid turns in tyrannosaurids is ecologically intriguing in light of their monopolization of large (\textgreater400 kg), toothed dinosaurian predator niches in their habitats.

  High performance garbage collectors build upon performance-critical low-level code, typically exhibit multiple levels of concurrency, and are prone to subtle bugs. Implementing, debugging and maintaining such collectors can therefore be extremely challenging. The choice of implementation language is a crucial consideration when building a collector. Typically, the drive for performance and the need for efficient support of low-level memory operations leads to the use of low-level languages like C or C++, which offer little by way of safety and software engineering benefits. This risks undermining the robustness and flexibility of the collector design. Rust's ownership model, lifetime specification, and reference borrowing deliver safety guarantees through a powerful static checker with little runtime overhead. These features make Rust a compelling candidate for a collector implementation language, but they come with restrictions that threaten expressiveness and efficiency. We describe our experience implementing an Immix garbage collector in Rust and C. We discuss the benefits of Rust, the obstacles encountered, and how we overcame them. We show that our Immix implementation has almost identical performance on micro benchmarks, compared to its implementation in C, and outperforms the popular BDW collector on the gcbench micro benchmark. We find that Rust's safety features do not create significant barriers to implementing a high performance collector. Though memory managers are usually considered low-level, our high performance implementation relies on very little unsafe code, with the vast majority of the implementation benefiting from Rust's safety. We see our experience as a compelling proof-of-concept of Rust as an implementation language for high performance garbage collection.

  We describe a derivational approach to abstract interpretation that yields novel and transparently sound static analyses when applied to well-established abstract machines. To demonstrate the technique and support our claim, we transform the CEK machine of Felleisen and Friedman, a lazy variant of Krivine's machine, and the stack-inspecting CM machine of Clements and Felleisen into abstract interpretations of themselves. The resulting analyses bound temporal ordering of program events; predict return-flow and stack-inspection behavior; and approximate the flow and evaluation of by-need parameters. For all of these machines, we find that a series of well-known concrete machine refactorings, plus a technique we call store-allocated continuations, leads to machines that abstract into static analyses simply by bounding their stores. We demonstrate that the technique scales up uniformly to allow static analysis of realistic language features, including tail calls, conditionals, side effects, exceptions, first-class continuations, and even garbage collection.

  This article studies twelve different normality tests that are used for assessing the assumption that a sample was drawn from a normally distributed population and compares their powers.   We bridge the gap between functional evaluators and abstract machines for the λ-calculus, using closure conversion, transformation into continuation-passing style, and defunctionalization.We illustrate this approach by deriving Krivine's abstract machine from an ordinary call-by-name evaluator and by deriving an ordinary call-by-value evaluator from Felleisen et al.'s CEK machine. The first derivation is strikingly simpler than what can be found in the literature. The second one is new.   In Compiler Design courses, students learn how a program written in high level programming language and designed for humans understanding is systematically converted into low level assembly language understood by machines, through different representations. This article presents the design, educative characteristics and possibilities of a modular and didactic compiler for a Pascal-like programming mini language that is super-set of Niklaus Wirth's PL/0. The main feature is that it implements the compiling phases in such a way that the information delivered to each next one may be reflected as an XML document, which can be studied separately. It is also shown that its design is suitable for being included as learning tool into compiler design courses. It is possible to implement a compiler in a high-level language like Python.

  Estimates of locomotory speeds of small to large-sized Patagonian dinosaurs are presented for the first time. These estimates are inferred from trackways found on fine to coarse-grained brown sandstones located in the lower section of the Candeleros Member of the Río Limay Formation (Albian-Cenomanian), Neuquén Province, Argentina. The method used is based on the measurement of the stride length (distance between two successive prints of the same foot) and of the length of the hindfoot print, which in turn, allows us to estimate the height at the hip joint and, therefore, the approximate size of the animal. The hypothesis of dynamic similarity implies that the movements of geometrically similar animals, although of different sizes, are dynamically similar only when they move with the same Froude number. The dynamically similar movements (i.e., those with equal Froude number) require equal values of relative stride length (ratio between the stride length and the hip joint height). The relationship between the relative stride length and the Froude number allows us to estimate the speeds of dinosaurs. The dinosaurian ichnofauna studied reveals low speeds that range from 0.5 to 2.6 m s-1. Our analyses show that the sauropods responsible for these trackways were either walking very slowly in a bipedal stance or alternatively they were progressing quadrupedally on a slippery surface.

  The known relationships of speed, gait and body size (derived mainly from mammals) are used to determine the gaits and theoretical maximum speeds of dinosaurs. Speed estimates are made for 62 dinosaurs (representing 51 genera) and are supplemented with information from comparative anatomy and from dinosaur trackways. It is concluded that smaller bipedal dinosaurs were capable of running at speeds up to 35 or 40 km/h. The so-called östrich dinosaurs" are credited with maximum speeds less than 60 km/h, and possibly as low as 35 or 40 km/h. Larger bipedal dinosaurs were probably restricted to walking or slow trotting gaits, with maximum speeds in the range 15-20 km/h. Most quadrupedal dinosaurs seem to have been restricted to a walking gait. Stegosaurs and ankylosaurs may have had maximum speeds as low as 6-8 km/h. Sauropods may have attained 12-17 km/h, and some ceratopsians may have been capable of trotting at speeds up to 25 km/h. Many dinosaur tracks have been found from which stride lengths can be measured1 .I have now obtained a relationship between speed, stride length and body size from observations of living animals and applied this to dinosaurs to achieve estimates of their speeds.   Higher-order programming languages (i.e., languages in which procedures or labels can occur as values) are usually defined by interpreters which are themselves written in a programming language based on the lambda calculus (i.e., an applicative language such as pure LISP). Examples include McCarthy's definition of LISP, Landin's SECD machine, the Vienna definition of PL/I, Reynolds' definitions of GEDANKEN, and recent unpublished work by L. Morris and C. Wadsworth. Such definitions can be classified according to whether the interpreter contains higher-order functions, and whether the order of application (i.e., call-by-value versus call-by-name) in the defined language depends upon the order of application in the defining language. As an example, we consider the definition of a simple applicative programming language by means of an interpreter written in a similar language. Definitions in each of the above classifications are derived from one another by informal but constructive methods. The treatment of imperative features such as jumps and assignment is also discussed.
