Balancing Bytes with Brains: Exploring the Role of Learners’ Control in Personalized Learning Tasks. Ritz, Eva (2024).
The increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI)-based learning systems unleashes new potentials in designing personalized learning experiences that enhance learning outcomes. However, prior research indicates that such systems can negatively impact engagement due to issues in human information processing. This study examines whether giving learners control over task difficulty selection in personalized learning systems can mitigate these effects. A laboratory within-subjects experiment involving 80 participants explored how control over personalized vocabulary learning affects learning performance and autonomy satisfaction. As such a control feature may lead to deeper information processing, I investigate the mediating effect of cognitive workload on the main effect. The study aims to contribute to human-AI interaction literature by shedding light on the importance of control in personalized system design and investigating its effects on cognitive workload, overall task performance, and autonomy satisfaction.

Back to the Basics of SARS-CoV-2 Biochemistry: Microvascular Occlusive Glycan Bindings Govern Its Morbidities and Inform Therapeutic Responses. Scheim, David E.; Parry, Peter I.; Rabbolini, David J.; Aldous, Colleen; Yagisawa, Morimasa; Clancy, Robert; Borody, Thomas J.; Hoy, Wendy E. (2024). 16(4)
Consistent with the biochemistry of coronaviruses as well established over decades, SARS-CoV-2 makes its initial attachment to host cells through the binding of its spike protein (SP) to sialylated glycans (containing the monosaccharide sialic acid) on the cell surface. The virus can then slide over and enter via ACE2. SARS-CoV-2 SP attaches particularly tightly to the trillions of red blood cells (RBCs), platelets and endothelial cells in the human body, each cell very densely coated with sialic acid surface molecules but having no ACE2 or minimal ACE2. These interlaced attachments trigger the blood cell aggregation, microvascular occlusion and vascular damage that underlie the hypoxia, blood clotting and related morbidities of severe COVID-19. Notably, the two human betacoronaviruses that express a sialic acid-cleaving enzyme are benign, while the other three—SARS, SARS-CoV-2 and MERS—are virulent. RBC aggregation experimentally induced in several animal species using an injected polysaccharide caused most of the same morbidities of severe COVID-19. This glycan biochemistry is key to disentangling controversies that have arisen over the efficacy of certain generic COVID-19 treatment agents and the safety of SP-based COVID-19 vaccines. More broadly, disregard for the active physiological role of RBCs yields unreliable or erroneous reporting of pharmacokinetic parameters as routinely obtained for most drugs and other bioactive agents using detection in plasma, with whole-blood levels being up to 30-fold higher. Appreciation of the active role of RBCs can elucidate the microvascular underpinnings of other health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, and therapeutic opportunities to address them.
Verbesserte Ausbildungsbedingungen in der Pflege?. Bär, Stefan; Steinweg, Veronica E.; Dauner, Dominik (2024). 77(2) 131–136.
Worked Examples to Facilitate the Development of Prompt Engineering Skills. Tolzin, Antonia; Knoth, Nils; Janson, Andreas (2024).
This paper explores the evolving field of prompt engineering in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs). As LLMs exhibit remarkable potential in various educational domains, their effective use requires adept prompt engineering skills. We introduce a skill-based approach to prompt engineering and explicitly investigate the impact of using worked examples to facilitate prompt engineering skills among students interacting with LLMs. We propose hypotheses linking prompt engineering, worked examples, and perceived anthropomorphism to the quality of LLM output. Our initial findings support the critical relationship between proficient prompt engineering and the resulting output quality of LLMs. Subsequent phases will further explore the role of worked examples in prompt engineering, aiming to provide practical recommendations for educational improvement and industry application. Additionally, this research aims to shed light on the responsible utilization of LLMs in education and contribute insights to educational practice, research, and organizational development.

Trustworthy age assurance? A risk-based evaluation of available and upcoming age assurance technologies from a fundamental rights perspective Sas, Martin; Mühlberg, Jan Tobias (2024).
Children represent a substantial portion of internet users, which creates an imperative to create a safe and secure online environment. Harmful content, however, is easily accessible, with 19% of respondents to a recent survey admitting exposure to pornography before the age of 13, 14% reporting being threatened, and 45% reporting verbal abuse online. Most providers of adult-restricted online content rely on self-declaration of age without further validation, which has proven to be ineffective and easy to bypass. Consequently, governments are urging the implementation of robust online age assurance systems that prevent children from accessing adult-restricted content or other types of harmful content online. Legislation aimed at improving online child protection, e.g., GDPR, AVMSD, DSA and age-appropriate design codes, consider age assurance as a protective measure and support their implementation online.
On Cross-Layer Interactions of QUIC, Encrypted DNS and HTTP/3: Design, Evaluation and Dataset. Sengupta, Jayasree; Kosek, Mike; Fries, Justus; Ferlin-Reiter, Simone; Bajpai, Vaibhav (2024). 1–1.
Every Web session involves a DNS resolution. While, in the last decade, we witnessed a promising trend towards an encrypted Web in general, DNS encryption has only recently gained traction with the standardisation of DNS over TLS (DoT) and DNS over HTTPS (DoH). Meanwhile, the rapid rise of QUIC deployment has now opened up an exciting opportunity to utilise the same protocol to not only encrypt Web communications, but also DNS. In this paper, we evaluate this benefit of using QUIC to coalesce name resolution via DNS over QUIC (DoQ), and Web content delivery via HTTP/3 (H3) with 0-RTT. We compare this scenario using several possible combinations where H3 is used in conjunction with DoH and DoQ, as well as the unencrypted DNS over UDP (DoUDP). We observe, that when using H3 1-RTT, page load times with DoH can get inflated by >30% over fixed-line and by >50% over mobile when compared to unencrypted DNS with DoUDP. However, this cost of encryption can be drastically reduced when encrypted connections are coalesced (DoQ + H3 0-RTT), thereby reducing the page load times by 1/3 over fixed-line and 1/2 over mobile, overall making connection coalescing with QUIC the best option for encrypted communication on the Internet.
Evaluating DNS Resiliency and Responsiveness With Truncation, Fragmentation & DoTCP Fallback. Dikshit, Pratyush; Kosek, Mike; Faulhaber, Nils; Sengupta, Jayasree; Bajpai, Vaibhav (2024). 1–1.
Since its introduction in 1987, the DNS has become one of the core components of the Internet. While it was designed to work with both TCP and UDP, DNS-over-UDP (DoUDP) has become the default option due to its low overhead. As new Resource Records were introduced, the sizes of DNS responses increased considerably. This expansion of the message body has led to truncation and IP fragmentation more often in recent years where large UDP responses make DNS an easy vector for amplifying denial-of-service attacks which can reduce the resiliency of DNS services. This paper investigates the resiliency, responsiveness, and usage of DoTCP and DoUDP over IPv4 and IPv6 for 10 widely used public DNS resolvers. The paper specifically measures the resiliency of the DNS infrastructure in the age of increasing DNS response sizes that lead to truncation and fragmentation. Our results offer key insights into the management of robust and reliable DNS network services. While DNS Flag Day 2020 recommends 1232 bytes of buffer sizes, we find out that 3/10 resolvers mainly announce very large EDNS(0) buffer sizes both from the edge as well as from the core, which potentially causes fragmentation. In reaction to large response sizes from authoritative name servers, we find that resolvers do not fall back to the usage of DoTCP in many cases, bearing the risk of fragmented responses. As the message sizes in the DNS are expected to grow further, this problem will become more urgent in the future. This paper demonstrates the key results (particularly as a consequence of the DNS Flag Day 2020) which may support network service providers make informed choices to better manage their critical DNS services.

AI literacy and its implications for prompt engineering strategies. Knoth, Nils; Tolzin, Antonia; Janson, Andreas; Leimeister, Jan Marco (2024). 6(June)
Artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly advancing. As part of this development, large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used when humans interact with systems based on artificial intelligence (AI), posing both new opportunities and challenges. When interacting with LLM-based AI system in a goal-directed manner, prompt engineering has evolved as a skill of formulating precise and well-structured instructions to elicit desired responses or information from the LLM, optimizing the effectiveness of the interaction. However, research on the perspectives of non-experts using LLM-based AI systems through prompt engineering and on how AI literacy affects prompting behavior is lacking. This aspect is particularly important when considering the implications of LLMs in the context of higher education. In this present study, we address this issue, introduce a skill-based approach to prompt engineering, and explicitly consider the role of non-experts' AI literacy (students) in their prompt engineering skills. We also provide qualitative insights into students’ intuitive behaviors towards LLM-based AI systems. The results show that higher-quality prompt engineering skills predict the quality of LLM output, suggesting that prompt engineering is indeed a required skill for the goal-directed use of generative AI tools. In addition, the results show that certain aspects of AI literacy can play a role in higher quality prompt engineering and targeted adaptation of LLMs within education. We, therefore, argue for the integration of AI educational content into current curricula to enable a hybrid intelligent society in which students can effectively use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT.

From Pastoral Hymns to Philosophical Contemplations: Change and Shift in Society from Early Vedic Age to the Times of Upanishads. Singh, Dr. Kuljeet (2023). 4(12) 199–202.
The Vedic period, spanning approximately around 1500-800 B.C , represents an essential period in the beginning and outspreading of Hinduism. This time witnessed an intriguing evolution, not only in religious thinking and ideas but also in the basic foundation of society itself. As time outspread, the effervescent pastoral society illustrated in the early Vedic hymns altered into a more complex and thoughtful society grappling with philosophical questions and societal changes beautifully represented in Upanishads. This paper delves deep into these undeniable shifts and traces the changes in the dynamics of society and religion during that period right from the dawn of the Vedas to their later chapters.

Revisiting the Architectures like Pointer Networks to Efficiently Improve the Next Word Distribution, Summarization Factuality, and Beyond. Chang, Haw-Shiuan; Yao, Zonghai; Gon, Alolika; Yu, Hong; McCallum, Andrew A. Rogers, J. Boyd-Graber, N. Okazaki (eds.) (2023). 12707–12730.
Is the output softmax layer, which is adopted by most language models (LMs), always the best way to compute the next word probability? Given so many attention layers in a modern transformer-based LM, are the pointer networks redundant nowadays? In this study, we discover that the answers to both questions are no. This is because the softmax bottleneck sometimes prevents the LMs from predicting the desired distribution and the pointer networks can be used to break the bottleneck efficiently. Based on the finding, we propose several softmax alternatives by simplifying the pointer networks and accelerating the word-by-word rerankers. In GPT-2, our proposals are significantly better and more efficient than mixture of softmax, a state-of-the-art softmax alternative. In summarization experiments, without very significantly decreasing its training/testing speed, our best method based on T5-Small improves factCC score by 2 points in CNN/DM and XSUM dataset, and improves MAUVE scores by 30% in BookSum paragraph-level dataset.
Sustainability as a social practice: Green Libraries Project. Msimango, Sibongile Oageng (2023). 3(2) 14–15.
There is a commonly known expression that goes ``When an elder person passes a way, a library burns to the ground''. In many African cultures, elder people play a vital role in the community: they are the custodians of tradition, the rock of the family unit and the bearers of wisdom. The library is of similar importance. It is a public space where knowledge is housed and created, and a place where people go to learn. A core principle of a library is that it is accessible and relevant to the context in which it exists, otherwise it may not attract the people for whom it is intended. Libraries do not have to be framed as the place of deafening silence and stringent rules. They can be a meeting ground for curious minds, a space of innovation and reflection, a place of learning and growing. What form can the library take? What role can it play in its respective neighbourhood and community? What does sustainability look like in such a place and why is that even important? A project conceived and implemented between Goethe-Institut and the French Institute of South Africa with the support of the Franco-German fund sought to explore the very question: how can libraries practice sustainability?

Urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) caused by Schistosoma haematobium is endemic in the South West Region of Cameroon. An understanding of the abundance and distribution of the Bulinus snail, intermediate host can inform strategic snail control programmes at a local scale. This study investigated seasonal dynamics and environmental factors influencing occurrence and abundance of freshwater snail intermediate hosts in Tiko, a semi-urban endemic focus in the Mount Cameroon area. A longitudinal malacological field survey was conducted between December 2019 and December 2020 in the Tiko municipality. Snails were collected for one year monthly at 12 different human water contact sites along a stretch of the Ndongo stream using a standardized sampling technique. Freshwater snails were identified using shell morphological features. In addition, water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solutes, salinity, water depth, width and flow velocity were measured, and vegetation cover as well as substrate type were determined. Bayesian regression models were used to identify the main environmental factors affecting the occurrence and abundance of Bulinus intermediate host. In total, 2129 fresh water snails were collected during the study period. Physa (51.4%) was the most abundant genus followed by Melanoides (28.6%) then, Bulinus (15.5%), Lymnaea (4.2%), Indoplanorbis (0.2%) and Potadoma (0.1%). Seasonality in abundance was significant in Bulinus sp as well as other genera, with greater numbers in the dry season (peaks between December and February). Water temperature, a rocky or sandy substrate type associated positively with Bulinus sp, meanwhile a higher water flow rate and medium vegetation negatively influenced the snail intermediate host population. These findings underscore the importance of timing behavioural and snail control interventions against schistosomiasis as well as increase vigilance of other trematode diseases in the study area. The continuous spread of planorbid snail hosts is a major concern.

Genomic signatures of selection at linked sites: unifying the disparity among species. Cutter, Asher D.; Payseur, Bret A. (2013). 14(4) 262–274.
Population genetics theory supplies powerful predictions about how natural selection, interacting with genetic linkage, will sculpt the genomic landscape of nucleotide polymorphism.Genetic hitch-hiking of neutral alleles linked to a beneficial mutation undergoing a 'hard' selective sweep, or the selective removal by background selection of deleterious mutations, will more greatly affect patterns of polymorphism in genomic regions with little recombination.Despite supporting evidence for genetic hitch-hiking and background selection from many organisms, empiricists have documented extreme disparities among species. The dominant features that could drive variation in linked selection among species include the potential roles for selective sweeps being 'hard' or 'soft' and the concealing effects of demography and confounding genomic variables. We advocate targeted studies of closely related species that differ in key variables to help clarify the causes of among-species disparities and to unify our understanding of how selection and linkage interact to shape genome evolution.

The population genetics of dN/dS. Kryazhimskiy, Sergey; Plotkin, Joshua B (2008). 4(12) e1000304-e1000304.
Evolutionary pressures on proteins are often quantified by the ratio of substitution rates at non-synonymous and synonymous sites. The dN/dS ratio was originally developed for application to distantly diverged sequences, the differences among which represent substitutions that have fixed along independent lineages. Nevertheless, the dN/dS measure is often applied to sequences sampled from a single population, the differences among which represent segregating polymorphisms. Here, we study the expected dN/dS ratio for samples drawn from a single population under selection, and we find that in this context, dN/dS is relatively insensitive to the selection coefficient. Moreover, the hallmark signature of positive selection over divergent lineages, dN/dS>1, is violated within a population. For population samples, the relationship between selection and dN/dS does not follow a monotonic function, and so it may be impossible to infer selection pressures from dN/dS. These results have significant implications for the interpretation of dN/dS measurements among population-genetic samples.

Effects of linkage on rates of molecular evolution. Birky, Jr; Walsh, J B (1988). 85(17) 6414–6418.
When an advantageous mutation is fixed in a population by selection, a closely linked selectively neutral or mildly detrimental mutation may "hitchhike" to fixation along with it. It has been suggested that hitchhiking might increase the rate of molecular evolution. Computer simulations and a mathematical argument show that complete linkage to either advantageous or deleterious mutations does not affect the substitution of selectively neutral mutations. However, the simulations show that linkage to selected background mutations decreases the rate of fixation of advantageous mutations and increases the rate of fixation of detrimental mutations. This is true whether the linked background mutations are advantageous or detrimental, and it verifies and extends previous observations that linkage tends to reduce the effects of selection on evolution. These results can be interpreted in terms of the Hill-Robertson effect: a locus linked to another locus under selection experiences a reduction in effective population size. The interpretation of differences in evolutionary rates between different genomes or different regions of a genome may be confounded by the effects of strong linkage and selection. Recombination is expected to reduce the overall rate of molecular evolution while enhancing the rate of adaptive evolution.
